However, having to call a handyman or a house contractor all the time just for maintenance checkups can cost you quite a bit of money. In order to save on these costs, it is best to know your way around the house. Here are some tips you can keep in mind.

1. Check the garage door and windows

You may have dumped a lot of clutter to your garage so it is not impossible for your garage doors to jam or not work properly when there are just so many things that surround it. Furthermore, garage doors are usually made of wood so they can also be in danger of termite attacks. Do a once a month check on this area of your home. Test the door to ensure that it is functioning properly. Ideally, the garage door is designed to reverse when hit by an obstruction. Check whether it reverses the function of the door is working. This will help you know whether the door is in need to repair or not. A quick repair can prevent serious damages such as garage door falling on a vehicle that may lead to major expenses in terms of damage repair of the door as well as the vehicle. This is also applicable to the rest of your house – check the windows and doors for caulking annually.

2. Vacuum the Cloth Dryer

The clothes dryer is one of the most taken for granted home appliances. The dryer should be vacuumed at least once a year. Vacuum the duct of the dryer. If the duct is of plastic material, replace it as plastic is prone to catching fire. It is best to have steel-metal duct for safe vacuuming.

3. Furnace Filter

The furnace filter is ideally replaced every quarter or as recommended by the manufacturers. Also, get the fireplace chimney inspected by professionals at least once in a year.

4. Test Ground Circuit Outlets: The ground circuit outlets should be tested monthly for risk of sparking and lose connection. You can call an electrician annually to check the entire electric circuit of the house to dodge any future problems.

5. Central Air Conditioner Cleaning

The condenser of the central air conditioner of your house should be cleaned off of leaves and debris seasonally for it to work effectively.
